What is wrong with the modern USA diet? As a short answer, both the amount of food we eat and the types of food we eat. Combine this with a decrease in physical activity and deadly obesity results. At a fast food restaurant, a person can easily consume their entire day’s calorie needs at a single meal. An extra-large soda, extra-large sports drink, or sixty ounces of fruit juice, along with a dessert can provide from 50% to 100% of a person’s calorie needs. Add high fat fried meat and fried vegetables (such as potatoes) and the scales are tipped towards rapid weight gain.

So, any sensible diet or weight loss program will require reduction of calories (particularly fat calories due to their harmful effects on the heart and increased risk of other diseases from a high fat diet) and an increase in physical activity. This is a gradual lifestyle change, and it requires some sensible understanding of why we eat more and gain weight rapidly as our theory explains above.
